Lloyd Ryland
Lloyd was one of the
very early members of the old Berkeley Flotilla 26 (now
12-21), and a member of the Temporary Reserve during WW II. After the
war, he was part of the crew of a large USCG patrol boat which
was crewed entirely by Auxiliarists.
Lloyd was a wonderful instructor, specializing in marine engines but
teaching many parts of the BS&S course. He served numerous terms
as Flotilla Commander and also in staff positions at the flotilla,
division, and District level. He kept his sailboat on the Bay in winter,
and moved to the Delta in summer. He was also the unofficial
historian
of FL 26, and also wrote a history of yachting on SF Bay for part of
the 20th century.
Besides his Auxiliary involvement, he was a chemist at one of the large
local petroleum companies. He was an enthusiastic member of the
Berkeley Yacht Club, and very active in PICYA and other boating
organizations, working for legislative changes advantageous to boating.
Another of Lloyd's hobbies was the raising of semitropical plants, at
which he became an expert.
For many years, he also cared for his aging mother.
Lloyd died in late February of 2006, and he will be sorely missed. |
