11th DISTRICT COMMANDER'S
DIRECTION AND GUIDING PRINCIPLES

RADM Craig E. Bone, District 11 Commander speaking

RADM Craig E. Bone, District 11 Commander

We exist to serve the public and U.S. National Security not ourselves.

Honor the mariner, the public we serve, and each other.

Respect others and be open to others perspectives and beliefs.

Be the Guardians of our CG culture and core values – Honor Respect & Devotion to Duty

All D11 members are leaders.  There is no rank or uniform attached to leadership.

Coast Guard work and the work of those we regulate are inherently dangerous.  Most laws, regulations, and policies are written in someone’s blood - Know and follow them.

Qualifications, experience, commitment, and preparation for expected and unexpected events are keys to our performance.  There are no shortcuts to being professionals.

Complacency begets mediocrity and failure. We must be Semper Paratus every day.

We must have balance in our lives, just as we must have balance in our missions.  Care for our families, our nutrition, and health and well being is critical to our D11 success.

It really is important for all of us to enjoy and take great pride in our work, develop some great friendships, instill some great memories, and have plenty of fun along the way.

Train, trust, empower, and guide our people.  Promote openness and empowerment versus control of information and people.

Consistently reward good performance – reward aligned risk more than punishing failure.

Invest in people: provide growth opportunities - support continuous learning and development – tolerate mistakes – turn weakness into strength.

Seek positive outcomes and seize opportunities.  Don’t wait for others to come to you – you seek out the opportunities or ask to be considered for those that may come your way.

Look to develop and share solutions to our own problems first.  Welcome innovation and ideas at all levels.

Don’t try to ‘go it alone’ - we will succeed together.  Collaboration, integrated teams, and partnerships are force multipliers and critical to our success.

Don’t ever quit on yourself, and we won’t quit on you.
