2008 Recreational Boating Safety "Eagle" Award of Excellence

It is my great pleasure to announce that Mike Lauro DSO-VE has been chosen by our National Area Commodore - Pacific as the Pacific Area recipient of the 2008 RBS "Eagle" Award, to be presented at NACON this August in Orlando, FL.
"The Office of Boating Safety, Recreational Boating Safety Awards of Excellence, (also known as the Eagle Award), are presented each year to recognize one of the top contributors to recreational boating safety missions in each of the three Auxiliary organizational areas. Each National Area Commodore (ARCO) is responsible for selecting one member from the area they represent.
Area candidates are nominated by each District Commodore and forwarded, with
supporting data, to their respective ARCO. Based on overall contributions,
each ARCO selects an award recipient based their own qualitative or quantitative
evaluations of the data submitted in support of the candidates. The USCG Chief
of Boating Safety makes the individual presentations."
This is in recognition of his great and sustained contributions to our VSC program, not only in performing a huge number of VSCs, but because of his total commitment to the program through teaching, recruiting, and more recently, helping to develop our VE web site.
Congratulations to Mike for a well deserved recognition!

Fleet Week San Francisco will be October 9-14

Fleet Week will feature both the U.S. Navy's "Blue Angels" and the Canadian Forces "Snowbirds" in addition to U.S. Navy ships and "Team Oracle" aerobatics.
The parade will be on Saturday, October 11, from noon to 1300, followed by the air show, with the Blue Angels scheduled for 1500.  The air show will be repeated on Sunday, October 12, from 1300-1500, followed by the Blue Angels at 1500 again.  There will also be an "Italian Heritage Day" parade on Sunday from 1230 to 1500.
Note that the dates no longer conflict with the National Search and Rescue competition scheduled for October 3-5 in Cape May, New Jersey.  So if you were reluctant to sign up for the District SAR competition (DSAR) because of the conflict, worry no longer!

Boating Hotline

A recent notice from CHDIRAUX brought to our attention the discontinued Coast Guard support of the toll-free Boating Safety Hotline number 1-800-368-5647.  This number is widely listed on some pamphlets and boater education materials, including ABC (Page 50) and the newly released BS&S (Page 27).  Please strike that number from such materials you have on hand, but continue to promote the www.uscgboating.org site which still provides boat recall and other information, and the CG Auxiliary Hotline number 1-877-575-6296.

Wear It California 2008 Campaign

California Dept. of Boating and Waterways (Cal Boating) will be conducting the Wear It California 2008 lifejacket campaign in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta starting next month.  Cal Boating has invited AUX 11NR members in the Delta region to assist with the campaign:
Information sheet (.pdf file)   Schedule (.xls file).
Volunteers will receive for their efforts a "Wear It California" t-shirt for their first shift, and if you do 15 shifts you get an inflatable lifejacket.  In addition to that, there's a cool ski boat that's involved in the promotion, and there are opportunities to assist with operating it.

The Auxiliarist would have an opportunity to earn the Assistant Contingency Planner qualification, AUX-ACP Workbook  (qualification counts toward the Trident award...link).
Those interested in helping in this way, please contact Steve Salmon.  Previous planning experience would naturally be helpful, but is not required.

Past Captains Fair is a Grand Success

Coast Guard Island hosted two hundred and fifty USCG Auxiliary members, including twenty five members attending a National Public Affairs “C” School as part of for the Past Captains Training Fair February 16 & 17.
The use of Gresham Hall for registration, the District Store, snacks/fluids and Boat Show demonstration booth, worked extremely well and will be incorporated in future PCA Training Fairs.  Gresham Hall became a natural meeting and gathering spot for all attendees.                  Report

"Tall Ships" from all over the world - FESTIVAL OF SAIL

Including the U.S. Coast Guard barque "Eagle,"  tall ships will be visiting San Francisco Bay from July 23rd to July 27th.  The event is called the "Festival of Sail."
Sector San Francisco's Waterways Management Division is looking for Auxiliarists to help with several tasks connected with the Festival of Sail.  If you would like to volunteer for one of the positions detailed below, please let me know and I will forward your name.  Please include a contact telephone number.[email]
Like the great Cape Horn square-riggers built during the first three decades of the 20th Century - the twilight era of sail - the Eagle is constructed of modern materials. The Eagle has a steel hull four-tenths of an inch thick, two full-length steel decks with a platform deck below and a raised forecastle and quarterdeck. Its weather decks are made of three-inch-thick teak over steel. The Eagle eagerly takes to the element for which it was designed, effortlessly and gracefully driving under full sail in the open ocean at speeds up to 17 knots.

E-mail Blockage Advisory

Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) bock our messages needed by members.  If members report our messages as spam, it causes all messages to be blocked with our e-mail extension (d11nuscgaux).  If a member wishes to be excluded from district communications, then just delete the message and remove oneself from the District email lists altogether.  Removal instructions are included on all messages.
For those who want to make sure they get the messages, there are steps you can take to help increase your chances of getting important messages from us.  Please check out  the Advisory document on the "Downloads" page ...link.
Unfortunately, when an ISP blocks us, it may take several days to get them to unblock us.  The only way to assure receiving district messages, white list district messages and email addresses.
